Rocky Hill Observatory
Retrofitted. Upgraded. Reimagined.
Sea West modernized Rocky Hill Observatory with the installation of a new PlaneWave CDK20, transforming an aging observatory into a high-performance imaging platform built for years of reliable operation.
About the observatory
Rocky Hill Observatory is a privately owned observatory designed to support advanced astronomical imaging from a dedicated roll-off roof facility. Originally constructed around an earlier generation telescope system, the observatory provided a solid foundation for astronomical observation but required modernization to take advantage of the latest developments in telescope technology, imaging performance, and system integration.
With a focus on long-term reliability and high-resolution imaging, the observatory owner partnered with Sea West Observatories to upgrade the facility and prepare it for the next generation of astronomical exploration.
Project Scope
Sea West Observatories was contracted to retrofit the existing observatory and replace the aging telescope system with a new PlaneWave CDK20. While the observatory structure remained in excellent condition, the original equipment was beginning to limit the performance and capabilities of the facility. The goal of the project was to modernize the observatory while utilizing the existing roll-off roof infrastructure.
The project included the removal of the existing telescope system and integration of the new PlaneWave CDK20 optical system. Sea West performed system installation, equipment integration, cable management, and observatory configuration to ensure all components worked seamlessly together. Careful attention was given to routing and protecting power and data connections throughout the observatory, creating a clean and serviceable installation capable of supporting years of reliable operation.
Following installation, the observatory was tested and optimized to maximize imaging performance and operational reliability. The completed upgrade transformed Rocky Hill Observatory into a modern astronomical imaging platform capable of producing high-quality scientific and astrophotographic data while preserving the character and functionality of the original observatory.
Partners
Sea West worked closely with the observatory owner and PlaneWave Instruments throughout the upgrade process. Through careful planning, equipment integration, and system commissioning, the project successfully brought a new level of performance and capability to Rocky Hill Observatory while extending the life of the existing facility.
